The PSI Council is appointed by the Minister for Health and Children and, as per Part 3 of the Pharmacy Act 2007, consists of a majority of non-pharmacists.
Of the 21-member Council, nine are registered pharmacists who are elected by registered pharmacists and subsequently appointed by the Minister.
In addition a registered pharmacist representative of the Schools of Pharmacy is appointed.
The other members of Council include:
a nominee of the Irish Medicines Board as representative of the management of the regulation of medicinal products
a nominee of the HSE as representative of the management of the public health sector;
a person representative of the provision of continuing professional development in relation to pharmacy;
three persons with such qualifications, expertise, interest or experience to make a substantial contribution to the performance of PSI functions.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Council) Rules 2008 (SI No. 492 of 2008) outline the general administration, management and governance of Council and its Committees. The Rules also outline the procedure for the selection of members for appointment to Council (election of pharmacists members).
