James Coleman Scholarships 2009/2010

T
he closing date for receipt of applications was Monday, 30th November, 2009.

The late James Coleman FPSI held the position of Registrar of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland from 1947 until his retirement in 1975. As well as his longstanding professional contribution to the pharmacy profession, Mr Coleman bequeathed to the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland a trust fund for the purpose of creating scholarships for students pursuing a course leading to the qualification as a pharmacist.

The Trustees of the James Coleman Fund are pleased to announce the availability of a number of “James Coleman Scholarships” for 2008/2009 (worth €2,000 each) to students studying pharmacy. The purpose of the James Coleman Scholarships is to assist competent and desirous Leaving Certificate and undergraduate students who were either born on the island of Ireland or are citizens of the State, and who, due to economic or social difficulties, might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue a course of studies leading to qualification of as a pharmacist.

Entitlement to Apply:
1. You must be in your Leaving Certificate year and have been accepted for a place in a pharmacy degree course recognised by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, leading to qualification as a pharmacist, or you must be a student currently attending a pharmacy degree course recognised by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, leading to qualification as a pharmacist.
2. You must have been born on the island of Ireland or be a citizen of the Republic of Ireland.
3. You must be eligible for a Local Authority Higher Education Grant or otherwise prove that due to economic or social difficulties you are unable to pursue such a course of study leading to qualification as a pharmacist.

Assessment of Applicants:
Applications from persons who fulfil the above eligibility criteria will then be assessed based on their academic ability and School/College record, interest in pharmacy and their financial situation by the Trustees of the Fund. It should be noted that any attempt, direct or indirect, by an applicant to influence the assessment process will result in disqualification. Trustees should not be contacted directly by applicants.

The Scholarships will be granted for the period of one year only. Students wishing to receive a Jim Coleman Scholarship in the
following academic year must reapply.
