Part 4 of the Pharmacy Act 2007 establishes new Education and Training Rules. These rules (Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training Rules 2008 - SI No. 493 of 2008) are intended to set out in greater detail the procedures and requirements which will be operated by the PSI in carrying out its various functions under the provisions of the Act.
The Education and Registration Unit of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) oversees the undergraduate education and pre-registration training of pharmacy students in Irish schools of pharmacy to prepare them for registration as pharmacists.
A person who wishes to become a pharmacist in Ireland must:
- Register with the PSI on commencing a pharmacy degree course
- Complete a four-year accredited pharmacy degree course in a school of pharmacy in Ireland and obtain a pharmacy degree
- Complete a period of one year’s practical training, approved by the PSI, under the supervision of a practising tutor pharmacist. This is referred to as “pre-registration training”.
- Pass the Pharmaceutical Licence Examination.
- On completing all four requirements above, the person is entitled to apply to become registered as a pharmacist in Ireland
