Part 4 of the Pharmacy Act 2007 establishes new Education and Training Rules. These rules (Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training Rules 2008 - SI No. 493 of 2008) are intended to set out in greater detail the procedures and requirements which will be operated by the PSI in carrying out its various functions relating to education and training under the provisions of the Act.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) has always overseen the undergraduate education and practical training of pharmacy students in Irish schools of pharmacy to prepare them for registration as pharmacists. The PSI Council, however, at its meeting on 7 July 2009, endorsed the recommendation that an academic institution will provide the in-service practical training programme (pre-registration training) on behalf of the PSI for a 3-year period, starting with the 2009-2010 training year. This programme is known as the National Pharmacy Internship Programme.
A person who wishes to become a pharmacist in Ireland must:
- Complete a four-year accredited pharmacy degree course in a school of pharmacy in Ireland and obtain a pharmacy degree.
- Complete a period of one year’s practical training, approved by the Professional Development and Learning (PD&L) Committee of the PSI Council, under the direct supervision of a practising tutor pharmacist. (i.e the National Pharmacy Internship Programme)
- Pass the Professional Registration Examination.
