Public Consultation on Code of Conduct and Statutory Rules

Date: 11 September 2008

In accordance with sections 11(6) and 12 of the Pharmacy Act 2007, the PSI, the pharmacy regulator, wishes to invite the public and all relevant stakeholders to submit their views on a draft statutory Code of Conduct for pharmacists, and draft statutory rules for (a) Rules of Council; (b)Education and Training Rules; and (c) Registration Rules.

The Pharmacy Act 2007 requires the PSI to draw up a Code of Conduct for pharmacists, breaches of which may be regarded as professional misconduct. This statutory code will replace any existing code of conduct for pharmacists and pharmacies and shall be binding in its effect. The Code of Conduct is a public declaration of the principles and ethical standards which govern pharmacists in the practise of their profession.  A person dealing with a pharmacist (whether as a patient, a health care professional or a member of the general public) is entitled to expect that a pharmacist will conduct himself/herself in accordance with the principles laid down in the Code of Conduct.

The Act also establishes new systems in regard to the Rules of Council, Education and Training Rules, and Registration Rules. These draft rules are intended to set out in greater detail the procedures and requirements which will be operated by the PSI in carrying out its various functions under the provisions of the Act.

The draft Code of Conduct and draft statutory rules (along with summaries of the draft statutory rules) are available to view below.

Written comments are welcome and may be sent by email to: consultation@pharmaceuticalsociety.ie,
or by post to Public Consultation, Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, 18 Shrewsbury Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
This period of consultation will end at 12 noon on Friday, September 26th 2008.

Please Note: All submissions received will be subject to the Freedom of Information Acts 1997 and 2003.
