Online RPB Register Available to Public on PSI Website
Date: 02 February 2009
The PSI (Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland), the pharmacy regulator, has introduced a new online register that allows the public and patients to check if pharmacies are registered with the regulator, it was announced today.
Dr Ambrose McLoughlin, Registrar and CEO of the PSI, described the move as a very significant development. “The registration of pharmacies is the latest phase in the implementation of Pharmacy Act 2007 and brings about a significant change in how pharmacy in Ireland is regulated. The online register will allow patients, public, employers and others to check the registration status of a pharmacy for the first time. There will also be a new professional management structure as pharmacies must now name superintendent and supervising pharmacists with at least three years’ post-registration experience. These changes underpin our continuing drive to improve accountability and openness in the pharmacy sector.”
The register, which can be accessed by clicking on the ‘Search our Registers’ button, includes the details of all currently registered pharmacies (termed ‘retail pharmacy businesses’ in the Pharmacy Act 2007).The register will be updated daily and will contain the registered details on that day based on the latest information available to the PSI.
There is also the need for the first time for each pharmacy to name a superintendent and a supervising pharmacist with at least three years’ post-registration experience. The management of the sale and supply of medicines must now be under the personal control of the superintendent pharmacist. Each pharmacy must also have a supervising pharmacist responsible for managing the pharmacy on a day-to-day basis.
The public online register currently has the registration number, name, address and contact details of each pharmacy. It is expected in the coming weeks that further information, including the names of the superintendent and supervising pharmacists, will be added to the public register.
The new legislation, signed last November by Minister Harney, meant that from January 1, 2009 all pharmacies operating in the State must be registered in the Retail Pharmacy Businesses’ register kept by the PSI, in order to legally operate. From April 1 all pharmacies must display certificate of registration and certificate of supervising pharmacist. There are 1682 pharmacies currently registered.
The register, along with the registers of pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants, is published in accordance with the requirements of the Pharmacy Act 2007, which states that the PSI must ensure that the information in the register is available, without charge, to the public at all reasonable times.
