Registration Systems Under Part 4 of the Pharmacy Act 2007

The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney TD has commenced the second phase of the Pharmacy Act 2007, including Part 4 of the Act, which relates to the new registration systems for Retail Pharmacy Businesses (pharmacies), pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants.

A number of new PSI Rules are also now commenced including Rules for the Registration of Pharmacists and for the Registration of Retail Pharmacy Businesses. These Rules set out the detail of the procedures and requirements which will be operated by the PSI in the operation of its functions.

07 December 2009: Notice of Public Consultation Regarding Draft Statutory Rules
In accordance with Section 11(6) of the Pharmacy Act 2007, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), the pharmacy regulator, wishes to invite the public and all relevant stakeholders to submit their views on an amendment to the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Fees) Rules 2008. This period of consultation ends at 12.00pm, Monday 21 December 2009. Click here to view the notice of public consultation and the draft amendment.

Registration of Pharmacies and Pharmacists

Under the Pharmacy Act 2007, the PSI maintains registers of retail pharmacy businesses (pharmacies), pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants.

These registers are published online and are accessible and available to view on this website via the ‘Search our Registers’ button on the top right hand corner of this page.
From 01 January 2009, a pharmacy must be registered as a retail pharmacy business in the register kept by the PSI in order to operate and comply with the Pharmacy Act 2007.

Pharmacists and pharmaceutical assistants must be registered in the registers kept by the PSI in order to practise.

The commencement of Part 4 of the Act also means that a person now wishing to open a Retail Pharmacy Business must apply to register that pharmacy at least 60 days before it is opened, have the application processed (including inspection) and be registered in acordance with the statutory rules before it may operate.

It should be noted that there is a provision for an urgent or 'fast-track' processing of such an application, where the processing off the application is undertaken by the PSI in under 60 days. This incurs an additional fee.

Additional forms related to registration of pharmacists, pharmaceutical assistants and retail pharmacy businesses can be acccessed on the Forms for Download page.
